One-Stop-Shopping for Health Care & Family Services at Families First
Families First Health and Support Center in Portsmouth, the Seacoast's nonprofit community health center, provides one-stop-shopping for a broad range of services - from primary care and dental care to prenatal care, mobile health care for the homeless, parenting classes, family programs, and home visiting for families facing special challenges.
Health care is for men, women and children of all ages and is for people with or without health insurance. Parenting and family programs are open to all families. Most are free and include free child care.
"Kathy" had a good job in the technology field and good health insurance. Then, she suddenly became disabled and could no longer work.
"Suddenly, I found out what happens when you don't have health insurance," she says. "No one wanted to take me, and my medications were so expensive I couldn't fill them. My front tooth chipped and I could not afford to get it fixed. A friend told me about Families First. I was leery of going to a 'clinic' - but what a surprise was in store for me!"
"It turns out this is the finest medical and dental care and prescription help I have ever received," she says. "This one facility meets all my needs, and what a great model if more health care could be this way. It is like a wheel, and all the care professionals are the spokes. At the center is my overall health, which is great today, thanks to Families First."
